Our expedition ship

Our ice-strengthened vessel was built as a special purpose vessel and is an excellent choice for Polar expedition cruises going to remote locations.

Thanks to its high ice-class notation and nimble size, it is able to access shallower areas and narrow passages that larger ships cannot navigate. This gives us access to parts of Antarctica where very few visitors reach, and the ability to explore colonies and landscapes that are more untouched.

This is an expedition ship, and not a fancy cruise, and was designed to maximise wildlife viewing and shore / zodiac activities. Thanks to its compact size and low number of passengers, we are guaranteed extended periods of time on land and zodiacs of 5-6 hours every day, double the time of larger vessels.

The ship has large open deck spaces (with full walk-around possibilities), giving excellent opportunities to enjoy the scenery and wildlife. 10 Mark V inflatable Zodiacs and two gangways on her starboard side, ensure swift Zodiac operation and maximum time outside of the vessel and on / around the Antarctic Peninsula and water.

Detailed Itinerary

IMPORTANT: The itinerary while on the Antarctic Peninsula is for guidance only. The program and stops will vary depending on ice, wind, weather, IAATO regulations and wildlife conditions. Official sailing plans and landing slots are scheduled with IAATO prior to the start of the season, but the expedition leader determines the final plan based on feasibility and discussion with the Captain. Flexibility is paramount.

Day 1 : Arrival and welcome in Buenos Aires

Arrive in Buenos Aires and take an Uber to our hotel. Relax and get settled before our evening welcome reception and briefing, followed by our first dinner together at one of Buenos Aires fanciest restaurants.

We have a lot to celebrate!

Inclusions: Welcome reception and dinner with drinks.

Overnight at Hotel Krista 4*

Hotel Krista is local and female owned and located in the hipster neighbourhood of Palermo, where established and up and coming artists, fashion designers, cool bars and restaurateurs base themselves.

The hotel has a spa, a patio with a pool and garden and very spacious rooms with minimalistic design and clean lines in white and cream colors.

Day 2 : Fly to Ushuaia

We will start the day early with an airport transfer and our flight to Ushuaia, the capital of Tierra del Fuego, or the Land of fire, the southern most inhabited city on Earth.

You will be able to purchase snacks onboard on our 3.5 hour flight.

When we land in Ushuaia, we will take a short transfer to the hotel, check in and relax.

You will have time to enjoy the spa and wellness area or go for a walk in the nearby trails.

In the evening, we will meet again for an Argentinian wine tasting workshop and group dinner.

Inclusions: Breakfast and dinner at the hotel, flight Buenos Aires – Ushuaia, airport transfers, wine tasting workshop.

Overnight at Hotel Arakur 5*

Hotel Arakur is located in a privileged location in the middle of the national park, right above Ushuaia.

The best part of the hotel are its outdoor heated infinity pool and jacuzzi with incredible views over the bay and the Beagle Channel.

This 5* hotel is the best in town and has everything we need for a night of pampering before embarking on a trip of a lifetime. Rooms are comfortable, spacious and with forest views.

Breakfast is served among the trees and the indoor and outdoor wellness area and spa are a treat to the senses.

Day 3 : Embarkation in Ushuaia

Hours sailing: From 5pm onwards.

We will start the morning with a wonderful breakfast with views over the Beagle Channel.

We can’t leave Ushuaia without exploring its beautiful forests so we will spend the morning on a short guided hike in the surrounding area.

In the meantime, your bags will be dropped off at the pick up point in town so they can be taken to the ship and left in your cabins, ready to welcome you when you board the ship.

We will have lunch together in town and you will have a bit of free time for last minute purchases before we get transferred to the port for embarkation.

Onboard, you will be shown to your chosen cabin and have some time to unpack and settle in before the official safety briefing and abandon ship drill, both of which are mandatory.

Familiarise yourself with the ins and outs of your cabin and get to know your cabin mates better.

The ship will set sail and leave Ushuaia behind towards the quieter Beagle Channel in the early evening, while we enjoy some canapes and a glass of bubbly and toast to an amazing voyage.

Dinner will be served in the main restaurant and you will get the chance to meet the rest of your fellow passengers.

Inclusions: Morning guided hike, luggage handling and drop off, transfer to the pier, welcome champagne and canapes onboard, buffet dinner. Overnight in your chosen cabin.

Days 4 & 5 : Drake Passage

Hours sailing: All day sailing.

The infamous Drake Passage is the most turbulent passage in the world and is always unpredictable.

If we are lucky, we may enjoy a “Drake Lake” whereby the waters are calm and the ship can sail smoothly.

However, the more likely scenario is a “Drake Shake”, where the ship rolls side to side, or pitches at the front, and large waves hit the vessel. The overall experience of crossing the Drake is a sort of right of passage for the brave explorers who make it down to Antarctica.

During our crossing, there will be several sessions aimed at finalising admin tasks like assigning activity groups, learning about IAATO regulations, bio security checks where all your gear is confirmed for its safety for wildlife and the environment and the allocation of your rubber boots, which you will need to wear for every excursion off-ship.

There will also be several workshops and lectures on photography, whales, icebergs and ice formations, the Drake Passage, and more.

On the second day on the Drake, you will have to attend activity-specific briefings to learn more about what to expect when kayaking, mountaineering and camping, and decide if you want to sign up for any of them, all of which are included on our trip.

In between sessions, you will have free time to rest, read, watch movies, play board games, or look through the window and try to spot any wildlife.

The Bridge is typically open and you can chat with the Captain and Officers about how the ship works.

The 8-member guiding team is available throughout the voyage and can usually be found in the common areas. They’ll be happy to answer questions or share their knowledge.

Inclusions: Breakfast, lunch and dinner onboard. Unlimited water, snacks and hot drinks. Range of knowledge sessions and workshops. Overnight in your chosen cabin.

Days 6 to 12 : Antarctica

Hours sailing: Sailing will typically happen either during the night or during lunch time and can vary from 1 hour to 7 hours. IMPORTANT: The weather conditions determine the schedule of activities and the possible sites as well as the order.

If all goes to plan, on day 5 in the evening we should see the first sign of land, the Shetland Islands, and on day 6 in the morning we will wake up in Antarctic Peninsula ready for our first excursion.

For the next 8 days, we will be making the most of our expedition vessel and experienced crew to spot wildlife and get up and close with everything that makes Antarctica special.

Inclusions: Breakfast, lunch and dinner onboard, unlimited water, snacks and hot drinks. All expedition activities on land and on zodiacs. All technical gear and equipment required to participate in the activities. Overnight in your chosen cabin.

Places we might visit include:

Neumayer Channel

The vessel will cross this incredible passage made of an alpine environment with towering glaciers, icebergs and the most breathtaking landscapes. Only the most experienced captains dare to navigate the narrow corridor that is often full of floating ice.

Damoy Point

This is the best spot for camping and a great start of our Antarctic adventures. A curious and sometimes loud gentoo penguin colony, will serenade us as we go to sleep. This spot is also home to an Argentinian Shelter and a former British research station, now a museum and post office, which can be visited.

The protected waters of this bay and its orientation are the perfect location for orange and pink sunset hues as we wake up to pack our camping gear.

Pléneau Island & Lemaire Channel

If the ice allows it, we can sail through the narrow and dramatic Lemaire Channel towards Pleneau, if not, we will sail around to reach the island anyway.

Only the smallest ships like ours and the most experienced captains dare to navigate the iceberg infested waters os this incredible landscape. We will be so close to the mountain sides that we could reach out and touch them from the upper decks.

Hovgaard Island

Once we cross the channel, we will arrive at the magical environment of Pléneau from where we can launch our kayaking and mountaineering activities. Hike to the top and enjoy the panoramic view of the landscapes below, with icebergs and sea ice floating between towering peaks. There’s a good chance we’ll encounter humpback and minke whales here, as well as leopard seals and a friendly colony of gentoo penguins.

This is a great mountaineering location with 360 degree views to both sites from the top of the hike and kayaking opportunities among floating icebergs and colonies of penguins. We can get up and close with seals and observe whales from either the zodiac cruise or the kayaks. This is a truly magical location, even on the mistiest of days.

Stoney Point

This Argentinian summer research station is a good location to observe skuas and other birds and see a different kind of environment with moss and rocks. A colony of gentoo penguins keep the researchers company and seals chill on the ice. We will go on a zodiac cruise to see wildlife from eye level, and climb to the top for great views. This is also one of the possible locations for our polar plunge.

Neko Harbour

An epic landscape of mammoth glaciers and endless wind-carved snow, Neko Harbour offers opportunities for a Zodiac cruise and landing that afford the closest views of the surrounding alpine peaks.

This is the closest we will get to a glacier ending point which will afford incredible views and the chance to hear the constant cracking of the ice and snow avalanches.

While we explore the views and the penguin colony, a piece of glacier may break, creating a new iceberg and starting a tsunami wave right before our eyes. We will enjoy the ensuing waves from a higher point and feel the power of nature.

Foyn Harbour

Foyn Harbour is an excellent snowshoeing and zodiac cruising location with lots of chances to see whales, seals and the remnants of Guvernøren, a Norwegian factory ship deliberately run aground after catching fire in 1915. We normally spend 3 hours cruising around in search of wildlife. A cup of hot chocolate with whipped cream and rum may come our way from the ship’s team.

Portal Point

This large bay is usually a popular place for whales to be seen, even orcas. Hiking to the top will provide fantastic 360 degree views over the entire area for better spotting opportunities.

Charcot Point

This location at the end of the Lemaire Channel hosts the three most commonly seen penguin species, Adelie, Gentoo and Chinstrap, all of which nest in the area. The bay is y-shaped and a good spot for a landing and to get up and close with penguins.

Paradise Bay

We have the chance to make camp here like a true polar explorer, enjoying a supreme overnight Antarctic adventure.

Paradise Bay is a beautiful spot and if the weather is good, hiking to the top will provide near 360 degree views of glaciers, icebergs, penguin colonies and channels. When the vessel stops in this bay, the world seems to come to a stand still. This is also a great location for our outdoor dinner BBQ party on deck.

Your chance to enjoy a glass of mulled wine and dance the night away while penguins jump and whales swim.

Danco and Orne Islands

Orne Islands may be our first foray into Antarctic waters and the first taste of what the last continent has to offer.

Danco Island is not really an island but it is attached to the mainland. Thi is a breathtaking location with penguins resting or swimming from the pebble beach, floating icebergs and mountains surrounding two narrow openings.

Penguin highways criss-cross this location, but don’t miss hiking the steep path to the top, you will have great almost-360 views of the area. This is your chance to take that Antarctica flag photos as we are technically on the Peninsula.

Deception Island & Elephant point

Part of the South Shetland island archipelago, this is an active volcano caldera of steaming thermal waters and black sand beaches. We can walk the entire length of the beach and learn more about the island’s whaling history.

This was one of the most important whaling stations in Antarctica which was abandoned with the last volcanic explosion. Most of the equipment and infrastructure was left behind in haste and can still be seen today. Weather permitting, this may be the location of our polar plunge.

Elephant point is famous for hosting gentoo penguin colonies and large numbers of elephant seals that come here to mould. Piled together one on top of the other, they keep warm as their bodies change fur, with the occasional fights and disagreements made clear to observers.

Antarctica is home to endemic wildlife species that inhabit its waters. Some of them migrate to warmer climates in the winter while others live only in these remote corners. This is the wildlife you may see during this voyage:

Penguin colonies

Adeline, chinstrap, and gentoo colonies will be found on several of the landings with thousands of penguins in near proximity. Earlier in the trip, they may be nest making, piling stones up to host the eggs. Later on in the trip, we may encounter the first newborn penguin chicks hiding under their parents.

Whales and orcas

Humpback and minke whale sightings are almost always a guarantee near the ship or on zodiac trips, other species of whales are less likely but also possible. Orcas are a rare sighting, despite living in large numbers in Antarctica, but could be spotted.

Seals

Leopard seals, Weddel seals, and crap-eating seals will be found across the sites, on land, in the water and on ice floats. Fur and elephant seals are less likely to be seen but also possible.

Birds

Antarctica is a birder’s paradise. Cape petrel, Antarctic petrel, Southern fulmar, Antarctic tern, Snow petrel, Wilson Storm petrel, South polar skua, Antarctic shag, blue-eyed shag, Giant petrel, kelp gull and snowy sheathbill will all make an appearance throughout the voyage. At some sites we may see nesting groups.

This is an active trip with 2 excursions per day for a total of 5 to 6 hours off the ship, and with all activities included yet optional. You are always welcome to skip any. These are the activities you can participate in:

Kayaking

A 2-hour kayaking trip through breathtaking scenery, with sightings of wildlife (whales, seals and penguins) at eye level and the most incredible iceberg formations and landscapes. This activity is done in a small group of 10 people including the guide, in 2-person kayaks.

Snowshoeing / ice climbing / glacier walk

One of the three activities depending on physical level, weather, interest and gear provided. You will be assigned to a 7-person sub-group with your own guide (2 guides per excursion) and participate in either a snowshoeing hike, a glacier walk with crampons or an ice climb.

Zodiac cruises

Exploration on zodiacs, typically looking for whales, seals on ice floats, sea ice or iceberg formations. Zodiacs can take up to 10 guests and a guide.

Landings

Time on land, either on islands or on the Antarctic Peninsula, to explore on your own on well marked trails designated by the guides prior to disembarkation. Landings are done on zodiacs and typically involve getting off onto the water. We will explore penguin colonies, seal groups, landscapes and more. Landings offer the chance of hiking uphill to view points on almost all occasions.

Ice camping

Spend the night on Antarctica! We will have to dig our own protective bed in the snow and ice, prepare out sleeping bags in a waterproof bivy bag and spend the night under the midnight sun. In the morning, we will have to cover the bed back in and leave it all as untouched as we found it.

Polar plunge

Only for the bravest! Get in the waters of Antarctica on the signature polar plunge from the beach.

Day 13 & 14 : Drake Passage

Hours sailing: All day sailing.

Our time on Antarctica has come to an end and we need to start our trek home.

Sadly, as this is the end of our exploration, the return Drake Passage will feel longer because we don’t have the excitement of the Peninsula to look forward to.

The expedition team will offer 4 lectures a day to expand your knowledge and help answer the most commonly asked questions.

Lectures could be on how wildlife copes with the cold, the evolution of ice and glaciers and impact of global warming, humpback whales, survival in the cold, the race to the south pole, and more.

The Solo Female Travelers difference – What makes us unique

All our tours follow the same values and philosophy that makes us who we are which you can find here. Our Antarctica trip is different from all other Antarctic trips : We will spend THREE TIMES as much time on Antarctica than any other Antarctica itinerary, all activities are included and guaranteed, we will sail with a family-owned Dutch company and we will take away all the stress of pre-trip planning and logistics from Buenos Aires. While there will be other non-Solo female travelers guests onboard, you will be part of a small group of likeminded women coming together to share a magical trip.

Our expedition will spend 3 extra days and twice as much time daily out of the ship every day than any Classic Antarctica trip. We know this is a trip of a lifetime you are likely to take only once, and we want to make sure that you make the most of your time there, especially after crossing the Drake.

Unlike all other Antarctica trips, iconic experiences such as kayaking, snowshoeing, and camping are included in the package. You don’t have to stress over booking early to secure your spot or pay exorbitant prices out of pocket. Unless there is sustained inclement weather, all guests will be able to enjoy kayaking among icebergs, whales, penguins and seals, spending a night sleeping on Antarctica and hiking up snow-covered peaks with snowshoes on.

We are sailing with a Dutch, family-owned company that treats employees like family and is an expert in polar regions only. They don’t respond to shareholders or focus on maximising profits, but rather on doing right by its staff, the fragile eco-system of Antarctica and its wildlife.

Planning a once in a lifetime trip to the last untouched continent is time consuming and you are bound to have lots of questions. We will take the stress our of the trip planning by meeting you in Buenos Aires and taking care of all the logistics from there. We will also provide detailed pre-trip planning info.

You will be part of a cozy group of solo female travelers within the larger passenger group, so you know you will be surrounded by likeminded women.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is a trip of a lifetime and we know there are many things you’d like to know more about.

What are the COVID measures onboard and how will you ensure everyone is safe?

We require guests who develop a cough or cold-like symptoms to use a mask and separate themselves from the rest of the guests. COVID testing is not mandatory though it will be encouraged.

What are the arrival and departure details?

The trip starts and ends in Buenos Aires. We will meet in the evening of the first day as a group for a welcome and briefing and end with our return flight from Ushuaia to Buenos Aires. If you do not book the add-on extension, you will be in Buenos Aires airport at around 2pm on the last day of the tour provided there are no delays beyond our control. We do not recommend booking onward travels departing earlier than 5pm or later if flying out from a different airport (Buenos Aires has 2 international airports).

Is December a good time to visit Antarctica?

December, January and February are the best months in Antarctica for wildlife sightings and stunning landscapes. These are the summer months, so temperatures are warmest and the days are long.

December offers the best, most predictable and stable weather of the season, with a higher chance of sunny days, clear skies and some nights with the midnight sun.

This is a great time to see the animals that make Antarctica special; large penguin colonies of chinstrap, gentoo and adelie penguins will be nest-making and egg incubating in December. Towards the end of the trip, there is a chance to see some newly born penguin chicks keeping warm under the parents legs.

This is also the best time to enjoy pristine snow-white landscapes, still free from penguin poo and tourist footprints, a major highlight of any trip to Antarctica. Whales and seals will also be in the waters of the peninsula, as will most of the birds.

Will I get sea sick?

Our expedition ship is a stable and silent vessel designed for the rough polar waters. The waters around Antarctica are typically calm and the schedule of activities will try to avoid rough waters as much as possible while we are around the continent. However, the weather in Antarctica can be unpredictable and changing and could bring strong winds. That said, December offers the best chance at calm weather.

The real risk of seasickness on any trip to Antarctica lies in the Drake Passage, the body of water that separates Argentina and Chile from the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula. This is where the Pacific, Atlantic and Southern oceans converge creating high waves, rough waters, strong currents, swell and winds that could pick up to 90 knots.

If you are prone to sea sickness, we recommend talking to your doctor before the trip to take the necessary precautions and a prescription for seasickness medication. Even the most experienced sailors may be taken by surprise by an unusually rough crossing, so bringing sea sickness medication may be a good idea even if you do not usually experience sea sickness.

If you are unable to see a doctor before the trip, the onboard doctor will offer office hours on the first evening after embarkation and can prescribe seasick medication.

What if I cannot travel because of COVID or other restrictions?

Payments are not refundable if the trip goes ahead. This is why we require all guests to purchase travel insurance that covers unforeseen circumstances that would prevent them from traveling.

Our partner for this voyage is a member of IAATO, the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators and strictly follows all the regulations and measures agreed by the members in order to preserve the pristine and fragile eco system of Antarctica.

After every excursion, we will have to thoroughly scrub our boots and the bottom of our waterproof pants with bio-disinfectant liquid to ensure that we do not carry soil and other materials from one site to the other.

Before every landing, the guiding team will visit each site, scout wildlife locations, penguin highways and possible nesting sites and place poles marking the paths for the group to follow so as to respect wildlife’s cycles and make sure distances are kept. The entire guiding team will remain on shore to ensure that the eco system is protected and respected by every guest.

On zodiac trips, the guides will maintain a safe and responsible distance from wildlife and assess their behavior to understand how far to stay.

This is an expedition trip on a small vessel, not a fancy cruise, sp our itinerary is designed to include all activities and ample opportunities for everyone to explore Antarctica. As a result, this is a physically demanding trip with up to 6 hours on shore, in the cold, every day and unpredictable weather than can change every few minutes from sunny to snowy, from calm to windy.

You should be able to walk up and down stairs multiple times a day as the ship does not have elevators. Boarding the zodiacs requires going down and up a movable gangway. Landings almost always offer the chance of walking up small hills on slippery paths made of snow, ice or slush. You can choose not to hike up and stay at the base. Kayaking and snowshoeing require a minimum level of fitness, as does digging your bed in the snow during the camping night.
